KEY WORDS

Kalaripayattu is an ancient Indian martial art that combines physical movements, breathing techniques, and meditation to awaken the body's inner energy. Through a series of flowing sequences, we'll engage the body's natural kinetic energy, stimulating the flow of life force and cultivating awareness, balance, and flexibility. This martial art and dance form originated in the southern state of Kerala. For over 3,000 years, Kalaripayattu has been practiced as a holistic system of physical, mental, and spiritual development. It is a unique blend of yoga, martial arts, and dance that combines physical movements with breathing techniques, meditation, and spiritual practices.

TO WHOM

No prior experience with Kalaripayattu or martial arts is not required. This workshop is designed for beginners as well as those with experience in martial arts , movements, rhythm  dance and acting or who have experience in any physical works 
 

DESCRIPTION

In this 8-session workshop, we will explore the principles and practices of Kalaripayattu, focusing on the physical movements and rhythms that awaken the inner and outer energies of the body. We will delve into the theory and practice of Kalaripayattu, incorporating elements of Indian performing arts and Parai dance to create a dynamic and transformative experience.

OBJECTIVE

To learn and experience the fundamental principles and practices of Kalaripayattu, integrating physical movements, rhythms, and breathing techniques to expand the inner and outer energies of the body.

* Introduction to Kalaripayattu philosophy and history

* Basic stances and postures

* Fundamentals of footwork and movement patterns

* Breathing techniques and meditation

* Introduction to basic rhythms and instrumentation

* Advanced stances and postures

* Complex footwork and movement patterns

* Introduction to advanced breathing techniques

* Exploration of various rhythms and instrumentation

* Incorporating Parai dance movements

* Integrating fundamental techniques with advanced movements 

* Reflection and sharing on the journey of learning Kalaripayattu

* Demonstrate fundamental stances ,postures  choreographed movements in Kalaripayattu

* Perform basic footwork and movement patterns

* Apply breathing techniques for relaxation and focus

* Recognize and reproduce basic rhythms on Parai drums

* Integrate physical movements with rhythmic patterns for a holistic performance

TEACHER

Manoj Kaloorika is an Indian actor, musician, kalaripayattu and yoga practitioner.

He completed his university degrees in theater arts called B.T.A (Bachelor of theater arts ) 

M.T.A (Master in theater arts) and M-PHIL, in school of drama and fine arts Kerala, India. He worked in different countries as an actor and teacher for the last 20 years (India, Chile, Argentina, Japan) and now he lives in Finland, Porvoo. Manoj speaks English, Spanish, and now a bit of Finnish too…
