18.–22.2.2023
(peruttu)

KEY WORDS
Character mask, physical theatre, acting process, build a character, feelings and emotions, storytelling without words

AIMED FOR

Professionals actors, students and amateurs interested in masks and
physical theatre.
No need for previous experience.

DESCRIPTION

The focus of the workshop is on acting through character masks: human caricatures that amplify the intentions and emotions of the character. We will discover how the expression of the rigid full mask is changing and transforming according to the movement, breath and emotional state of the actor.

In the first phase of the work we study our own personal habits and mechanisms to move and react. The aim is to become more conscious of our body on stage and to increase the range of expressive capacity.

The second phase is dedicated to practicing specific elements of the mask work, such as gesture, focus, rhythm and timing of the action-reaction process.

We will develop scenes from certain concrete starting points, such as location, music or character.

The workshop is also highly recommended for actors with more traditional theatre background: Working with masks can help the actor to become more aware of their surplus habits they often take on stage and help them to use their bodies in a more economical and effective way.
